Portfolio of Works
These 1940's electric trolleys still rumble along to and from the southern end of the MBTA's Red Line. Not only are they not red, they're driven by Green Line drivers trained on street cars. For a time, they were painted greens a result. The Tangerine and Cream were the colors of entire fleet of trolleys in and around Boston before the official creation of the MBTA and as they have been in continuous use since that time, decision was made to have them be painted the way they originally were.
They also run right behind my house and stop for passengers two doors away. They are a constant and fascinating part of my life.
Urban landscapes, the shapes man has made on the land, the buildings we erect that separate us from the world around and from each other can yet bring a sense of place and a sense of community. I like to explore these spaces, their geometry, their juxtapositions and abstractions.
I grew up on a small harbor in Maine. My next door neighbors were lobstermen and the rest of the village were pretty much fisherman or in related industry. This stuff is in my blood.
Bridges and bridge-like structures fascinate me. A collector of my work recently commented to me that I seemed to have a deep interest not in bridges in general but more specifically the undersides of bridges. Although I'd never once had that thought, I was forced to immediately agree that she was certainly right.
I grew up in a small seaside town in Maine. I played in the shallows, swam in the chilly depths and sailed on the surface. As an artist I am fascinated by how to convey the liquid nature of water, how it's sometimes reflective and sometimes not, how shadows falling on it change it in so many ways.
I joined a number of artists painting this grand estate one day in 2021. Afterwards I started thinking how there was no way to convey the most delightful little details of the interior and exterior of the 1878 country mansion in a painting of one aspect of the place. Instead, I have taken a few of these wonderful, quirky details and committed them to small (5" x 5") panels.
Instead of a great feast, I present Small Bites of the Eustis.

These pieces show my interest in automobiles, trains, modes of transport, specifically not boats which are shown elsewhere
I don't do a lot of figurative work but I occasionally do subjects that don't fall neatly into the other large categories of my work. Some of this is in pen and ink in a "Notan" style.
